Overview:
This unit was in my 8th grade geometry classes. It is a relatively brief unit, only spanning over 8 class periods. The chapter is on the different aspects of angles and lines intersecting with circles. They began the unit with a small amount of prior knowledge of circles including how to find the circumference and area of a circle as well as what the radius and diameter were. Over the course of the chapter, students would come to understand how the secant and tangent lines can relate to one another, the relationships between chords of a circle or congruent circles, and the relationships that can exist between angles and arcs of a circle.
Contextual Factors Analysis:The purpose of the CFA is to help me better understand the students I have in my classroom. I do this through several avenues.
One way I analyze the backgrounds of my students is by looking at the environment we are in. This means taking a look at the broader Daegu area that they spend their time in and that they will be trying to fit themselves into the culture of. I will also be looking at the environment of the school. I will look at the resources provided by the school, the schools philosophy, and how the parents and families contribute to the school community. Finally, I will be looking at the individual backgrounds of my students. I gave them all a couple of surveys at the beginning of the semester to ask them more personal questions about their educational and family backgrounds. I did all of this so that I could get a better sense of what my students would need from me as a teacher. From all of this I was able to gather the attitudes that they had towards learning and how their environments contribute to that. Assessment Plan:Over the course of this unit, I gave mostly formative assessments. This was done in the form of different types of homework assignments, an in class quiz, vocabulary foldables, and a chapter review booklet. The only summative assessment they received was the end of chapter test.

Learning Goals:Because the sections in this chapter were short, the way that I structured my learning goals was to have an objective for each section of material covered. So everyday when the students would come into class, on the board they would see written on the board the goal for the class period. I felt it was important for them to know what I felt was most important for them to get out of each class period.
Design For Instruction:Throughout my unit, I tried to use the information I collected during my observation of my mentor teacher, writing my CFA, and working with the students to create lessons that engaged and challenged students.
Analysis of Learning:When we began the chapter, I asked everyone to complete a pre-assessment on information they would be learning in this chapter. This was partly to see what they already knew, but mostly to see what they came up with for what they didn't know. I used this as a baseline to develop the unit. I then used quizzes, homework assignments, and in class activity to monitor student development throughout the chapter.
